One of the biggest video game franchises, Gears of War, will be available on Netflix as both a movie and an animated series, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The streamer secured the media rights and partnered with the Canadian game developer, The Coalition, which first published the game back in 2007. The announcement follows months of protracted negotiations in a competitive environment.

Since the game’s initial release, Hollywood has been attempting to adapt Gears. When it came to the rights, which New Line had first snatched up, there was some hot potato play. When Scott Stuber was an independent producer in the middle of the 2010s, he was contracted to adapt Universal.

The setting for the Gears of War universe is a planet that is on the verge of social collapse due to a terrifying threat from creatures known as the Locust that live underground.

The famed Delta Squad, a well-trained fireteam led by disgraced sergeant Marcus Fenix, is now tasked with conducting humanity’s final stand against its ground-dwelling foes. Humanity is on the verge of annihilation.

Some very well-known actors have expressed interest in Gears, including Glass Onion actor and former WWE Champion Dave Bautista, who turned down a Fast and Furious part to play Fenix in a Gears of War adaptation.
