    Virat Kohli surpasses veteran Mahela Jayawardene to become the highest run scorer in T20 World Cup history

    Indian batting legend Virat Kohli scored 62 runs in the game against Bangladesh on Wednesday to beat Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene to become the highest scorer in ICC T20 World Cup events. Last day, against South Africa, although he could muster only 12 runs he surpassed 1,000 runs in this tournament.

    Kohli passed Jayawardene’s record in 23 innings, eight innings quicker than Mahela Jayawardene.

    KL Rahul also hit a half-century off 32 deliveries. Virat Kohli has returned back to his vintage form. He has mustered 156 runs in three matches at a strike rate of 144 in T20 World Cup. In 2022, Kohli has been featured in 17 T20Is. He has scored 641 runs at an average of 53.41. He has smashed one century against Afghanistan in Asia Cup 2022 and 82 runs against Pakistan in the opening match of the T20 World Cup.

    He has mustered a total of 3856 runs in 111 matches in T20Is which made him the leading run-scorer. Rohit Sharma is a step behind him and has piled up 2794 runs in 144 games. In T20Is and T20 World Cups he smashed the most half-centuries. He is the second-highest run-scorer in T20 World Cups and T20Is among his contemporaries.

    India had begun their career by defeating Pakistan in an epic clash that is going to be remembered by everyone. Virat himself scored 82 runs that helped India chase the total. In the next game too, they defeated the Netherlands however, they couldn’t win the match against South Africa.

    Kohli has also scripted other histories in T20 World Cup becoming the only player to win Player of the tournament awards twice (in 2014 and 2016). He has bagged six players of the match awards in the T20 World Cup, the only matter in the world to achieve this feat.
