Assassins Creed Red rumored to feature Samurai and Shinobi main characters

According to a recent report, Assassins Creed Red will feature a shinobi and a samurai protagonist. Assassin’s Creed Red, as many fans are aware, is an upcoming open-world RPG set in Japan, with similar reports indicating a release date of 2024 or 2025. For quite some time, fans have been clamouring for a game set in Japan.

Indeed, Ubisoft teased Assassins Creed Red as early as AC3. One image Connor sees depicts symbols from Egypt, Greece, and Japan, the first of which corresponds to Assassins Creed Origins and the second to Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. The announcement of AC Valhalla came as a bit of a surprise, but at the very least, a Japan-set game is on the way.

There are two playable characters, according to Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson: a samurai and a shinobi. Assassins Creed Red’s official teaser is said to depict the game’s female samurai protagonist, while the other character is said to be a shinobi and an African refugee who joined the Brotherhood at some point.

It is not stated whether the two characters have a choice, whether they are gender-locked (which seems likely), or whether they are both playable characters like Assassins Creed Syndicate’s Jacob and Evie.

It’s possible that there is a choice, similar to Alexios and Kassandra in Assassins Creed Odyssey.

If this character rumour is true, the pairing of a shinobi and a samurai is intriguing. In general, samurais were warriors from the noble classes, whereas ninjas were often from the lower classes. This explains why the shinobi would flee to Japan in the first place.

This could imply that, despite branding a Hidden Blade, the Samurai is aligned with the Templar Order (or Order of the Ancients), whereas the Shinobi is aligned with the Brotherhood of the Shinobi (or Hidden Ones). It’s also possible that these are distinct and separate factions operating alongside the franchise’s well-established mainstays, or that they’re still on the same side.
