Day 14 of the ongoing football World Cup witnessed something extraordinary when Argentina defeated Australia 2-1. The first goal was from Lionel Messi, which also took his total goals above the late Argentine legend Diego Maradona.
The other showdown on Saturday night was between the Dutch and the USA, where the former sealed a victory 3-1. The consequent result of both games locked the Quarter Finals between Argentina and Netherlands.

Argentina vs Australia
It was Argentina captain Lionel Messi’s 1000th professional appearance, and he opened the scoring in the 35th minute. This marked his 3rd goal in the ongoing tournament and nine in his World Cup career. Previously, the record was held by the legendary Maradona.
Australia had been great in putting up a great show but couldn’t resist Julian Alvarez sliding the ball inside the goal in the 57th minute, followed by a lapse from the Aussie goalkeeper Mathew Ryan. In the 77th minute, the Aussie substitute Craig Godwin hit the ball in the net with a bit of deflection off Eno Fernandez.
The Argentines could feel the pressure, but in the end, they kept their nerves and sealed the victory.
Netherlands vs USA
The USA had a strong start in their encounter against the Netherlands, but eventually, it was the Dutch who put the pressure on them and locked in a 3-1 victory to advance into the quarters.
Memphis Depay scored the first goal in the 10th minute. A sharp pass from Dumfries to Daley Blind got the Dutch 2-1 ahead.
Haji Wright, the USA substitute, provided his team with their only goal in the 76th minute. Just after five minutes, Dumfries helped his team take a 3-1 lead in the 81st minute.
