Yashpal Sharma Dies at 66

    The former Indian right-handed batsman, Yashpal Sharma passed away this Tuesday morning due to cardiac arrest at 66. He was addressed as ‘Crisis Man’ by Sunil Gavaskar for his spectacular batting and great ability to save innings at crucial times.  Yashpal Sharma was one of the heroes behind India’s first-ever World Cup win in 1983.

    Many eminent personalities have expressed their grief on hearing this news, and are shocked. Starting from Anil Kumble, Virender Sehwag, Wasim Jaffer, Irfan Pathan, Harsha Bhogle, VVS Laxman, and many others commented on this news, and also stated him as the hero of the 1983 world cup.

    The debut of Yashpal Sharma

    Yashpal Sharma made his debut to the Indian cricket team first in the ODI format, against Pakistan in the year 1978, at Sialkot. He scored a fast 26 of just 11 balls. However, Pakistan defeated India by 8 wickets. Next, he made his dream debut in test cricket in the year 1979, at Lords, one of the greatest cricket grounds in history.

    Yashpal Sharma Career

    Yashpal Sharma’s career span was from 1978 to 1985, with numerous good as well as important knocks. He saved India from many crises, hence the former Indian captain, Sunil Gavaskar also nicknamed the Crisis Man of India. He played 37 test matches for India, where he scored 1606 runs, and 42 ODIs with 883 runs, consisting of two centuries.

    One of the memorable deeds in cricket was that he finished as the second-highest scorer in the world cup of 1983. In 1985, he played his last international game during the West Indies tour of India.

    Yashpal Sharma breathed his last around 7:40 a.m., Tuesday morning. He suffered a massive cardiac arrest and was announced to be dead on arrival at the hospital.
