Pep Guardiola and Joao Cancelo have had a tangled relationship. They had their confusion often after the full-back, earlier Valencia man shifted to the Etihad in 2019 from Juventus. However, during the current seasons, the Portuguese has stood out to be one of the key players for Manchester City, having equal contributions in attack and defense.
Will Cancelo leave Manchester City following a rift with Guardiola?
A year back, Cancelo renewed with City until 2027. Back then, Guardiola had said,
“We had problems when he arrived, we didn’t agree on many things, partly because of my mistakes, but now I am delighted that he is completely happy and can play here for the next few seasons.”
Cancelo himself admitted that he had issues with Guardiola when he first joined. He said,
“I came from Juve who had a different way of playing, and I didn’t adapt to the team’s style. It was more my fault. I wanted to show my quality.”
After two wonderful seasons, he scored three goals and had ten assists last term- being questioned once again for his future. His form indicated that he was a substitute for Portugal in the last two games of the Qatar World Cup 2022.
Cancelo’s Numbers for club football at present
In the post phase of the Qatar World Cup, Cancelo played full-time in only two matches, and many of them didn’t even get the chance to participate on the pitch. His stats show that –
- 0 minutes against Liverpool
- 22 minutes versus Leeds
- 0 minutes against Everton
- 45 minutes against Chelsea
- Again 31 minutes against Chelsea
- Played full 90 minutes against both Man United and Southampton
- Didn’t get the chance versus Tottenham and Wolverhampton
It doesn’t seem like Cancelo wants to remain to play for the City, and if he doesn’t, he won’t fall short of clubs too.
