Borussia Dortmund are set to move on Thomas Meunier in the coming days, with the defender set to join Trabzonspor in the Turkish league. Negotiations are advanced between the two parties, and could be wrapped up very soon.
The 32-year-old was not registered in the club’s Champions League squad, in spite of featuring prominently in the group stages. And now, it has been revealed that a transfer will go through, confirming that he won’t stay at the club for too long. Meunier was placed on the market several times before, and in spite of rumours linking him with a return to Belgium, nothing went through before now.
Thomas Meunier to sign for Trabzonspor from Dortmund
The former PSG right-back signed for Dortmund after their Champions League final defeat against Bayern Munich as a free agent. But, he has been unable to nail down a starting spot during his time at the club, with injuries also ruling him out for a significant amount of time.
For PSG, he made 128 total appearances, playing 8,552 minutes across all competitions. During this time, he scored 13 goals and provided 21 assists, while also playing as a wing back when needed.
The Belgian won the Ligue 1 three times (2018, 2019, 2020), Coupe de France twice (2017, 2020) and Coupe de la Ligue once (2020) with the Parisians. For Dortmund, he has made 83 appearances, winning the DFB Pokal with them.
Now, Marius Wolf or Julian Ryerson could emerge as the starting right-backs for Edin Terzic. Thomas Meunier’s exit will also save the club a significant amount of money, with the club paying him €7.5 million per season, the fifth highest wage in the squad.
