    T20 World Cup: Chris Gayle scored the first century whereas, Suresh Raina is the first from India to smash a ton

    The T20 World Cup 2022 which will be held in Australia is knocking the door, with all the teams having their eyes on the beautiful Trophy. The Indian team consists of some great batters like Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, and Dinesh Kartik.

    The inaugural edition of the tournament was hosted in 2007 by South Africa. India was the winner of the tournament after defeating Pakistan in the finals.

    Chris Gayle who’s known for his hard-hitting ability was the first player in the world to smash a century, 117 runs in 57 balls against South Africa. He hit huge sixes and seven fours at a strike rate of 205.26. However, he was dismissed in the 17th over but his contribution helped West Indies to post a total of 205 runs for 6 wickets in 20 overs. In that game, Herschelle Gibbs (90*) and Justin Kemp (46*) had impactful performances. Even after Gayle’s spectacular performance, the West Indies team couldn’t win.

    From India, Suresh Raina was the first player to smash a ton. India and South Africa clashed in Group C. India was batting in the first over when Suresh Raina scored a century and scripted history. His ton helped the men in blue post a total of 186/5.

    He mustered 101 runs off 60 deliveries that included nine fours and five sixes at a strike rate of 168.33. The South African team could score only 172/5 and India won by 14 runs.

    Suresh Raina was the first Indian to score a century and third in the world after Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum.

    In a total of seven editions, he’s the only Indian to score a ton in T20 World Cup. On the other hand, run machine Virat Kohli’s highest score was 89 against West Indies at Mumbai Wankhede Stadium in the semi-final of the 2016 edition.
