The Professor Layton series is making a comeback on the Nintendo Switch with Professor Layton and The New World of Steam, according to a recent Nintendo Direct. The most recent game in the series was Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaire’s Conspiracy, which was originally released on the 3DS but later ported to the Nintendo Switch in 2019. There have been no new entries in the series since then.
Many fans have missed the puzzle-adventure game series, which was a smash hit when it debuted on the Nintendo DS in 2008. The games had a distinct art style that complemented the animated cutscenes and quirky characters that players grew to love. Level-5 has previously stated that Atama no Taisou and Sherlock Holmes were inspirations for the Professor Layton games, which resulted in some interesting and fun concepts incorporated into the game.
Professor Layton is making a triumphant return in a new game titled Professor Layton and The New World of Steam.
It was revealed during the most recent Nintendo Direct, which took place on February 8, 2023. The graphics in the teaser appear to have been upgraded to include 3D models, with series protagonist Herschel Layton standing dead center along a pathway surrounded by steaming machines. The title then appears along some cogwheels, followed by the final text, “A new mystery will begin.”
While no further details were provided, most fans will be excited just by the announcement. The Layton franchise may be making a big move to give fans something to look forward to, with what appears to be a new graphics system in place, as well as the intriguing Steampunk aesthetic. The last time the team tried something new, Professor Layton, vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney received positive feedback.
Professor Layton and The New World of Steam are in development for the Nintendo Switch.
