Luka Doncic was already perfectly established as an NBA star in the last match, but on Tuesday night, he created history as he helped the Dallas Mavericks to an outstanding overtime win against the New York Knicks.
Luka Doncic helps create history
The Slovenian guard guided the Mavs to achieve the near impossible as they bounced back from nine points down to push the game to overnight with just 33 seconds to spare in regulation time.
Jumping back from a nine-point deficit with less than 35 seconds to go is something that no team has pulled off in the last 20 seasons. Stats show all 13,884 times a team got into that position, and they have been defeated. By doing this, Doncic achieved something sensational outside career highs in points and rebounds and a franchise record for points. He achieved a feat no player has ever been able to previously.
Luka Doncic’s amazing stat line of 60 points, 21 rebounds, and 10 assists is unparalleled; a 60-20-10 triple-double has never occurred in NBA history so far. He even joined the exclusive triple-double club with James Harden, being only the second player to score a 60-point triple-double.
The 23-year-old is also among the six players to achieve six or more 40-point triple-doubles. The names in the premium club are Oscar Robertson, Harden, Russell Westbrook, Wilt Chamberlain, and LeBron James.
An incredible finish
To push it to the overtime, Luka Doncic didn’t only rely on his talent but his basketball IQ too. In the final play, he willingly missed a free throw and then grabbed the rebound before scoring the amazing bucket, which concluded the game with a tie.
The three-time All-Star scored crucial 10 points in the final minute of regulation time before going for a further seven in the overtime. This has surely been a terrific night for a player, still so young and early in his career!
