The BCCI will announce the new selectors by the first week of January. The CAC (Cricket Advisory Committee) was held on December 29 to shortlist the candidates. Shockingly, there are no big names for the posts. As per reports, Chetan Sharma will continue to be a member of this committee. Venkatesh Prasad, nominated from the South Zone, can be the next chairman. On the other hand, Prasad has played more tests than Chetan so he overshadows him. The new selection committee will apparently select the squad for India vs New Zealand series.
To be a part of the selection committee, BCCi received over 200 applications. The CAC will have to interview both Chetan (South Zone) and Harvinder Singh (Central Zone). The CAC comprises of
- Ashok Malhotra
- Jatin Paranjpe
- Sulakshna Naik
These three people will be having a meeting in Mumbai offline and go through the candidates to prepare a shortlist. The members will then meet the BCCI officials and begin the interview process with shortlisted candidates.
“Of course, Chetan has a good chance and that is why he has reapplied. We have received a lot of applications but Chetan and Venkatesh are still two of the most qualified candidates. It is up to the CAC to decide whether to give Chetan and Harvinder a second chance. We will have a new selection panel by January 1st week,” a BCCI official said
Venkatesh Prasad who’s from South Zone is considered to be the most qualified candidate for this job. Earlier, he played 33 Tests and 161 ODIs and can even become the new chairman of the selectors. Chetan was featured in 26 Tests for India but unfortunately, Prasad has more Test experience than him. Here, the latter one will be preferred more. Chetan Sharma is one of the favorites of BCCI. His position as chairman will depend on Venkatesh Prasad’s selection.
Salil Ankola is from the West Zone and has a good chance of taking the chairman’s position if he gets backing from Ashish Shelar who’s the strongman of Mumbai’s cricket. SS Das from the east Zone can replace Debasish Mohanty whom he lost last year. Harvinder Singh is a strong candidate from central zone and has a good chance of retaining his position.
