Ghostwire: Tokyo, a former PlayStation 5 console exclusive, will be available on Xbox Game Pass starting next month. When Microsoft announced its acquisition of Bethesda in 2020, there was considerable uncertainty about what would happen to the timed PlayStation console exclusives Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo.

With the release of Deathloop on Xbox consoles last year, fans learned that the exclusivity period would expire, implying that they would launch directly into Xbox Game Pass almost exactly 12 months later, and now Bethesda has confirmed that Ghostwire: Tokyo will be released on Xbox in April.

Ghostwire: Tokyo was first announced at E3 2019 as Tango Gameworks’ next new IP, following the surprise release of Hi-Fi Rush on Xbox Game Pass.

After a somewhat hectic development period that saw the departure of its original director, Ikumi Nakamura, shortly after its announcement, Ghostwire: Tokyo was released on PS5 and PC on March 25th, 2022. The game received a mixed reaction, with many critics praising the setting and atmosphere while criticizing the game’s short length and simplistic combat.

As the game approaches its first anniversary, Bethesda announced today that Ghostwire: Tokyo will be released on Xbox Series X/S and Xbox Game Pass on April 12th, along with the “Thread Update.” This update adds new areas to explore, a new rogue-like inspired game mode, and more complex combat mechanics, addressing one of the game’s major criticisms.

The game will also include new and expanded main story cutscenes, fleshing out the narrative even further. On April 12th, the new update will be available for all platforms, including the PlayStation 5.

Following the success of Hi-Fi Rush’s surprise release in January 2023, Bethesda is eager to release Tango Gameworks’ other recent new IP, Ghostwire: Tokyo, on Xbox Game Pass as well, as the service helped make the studio’s previous title an overnight sensation. With the more mixed reaction to Ghostwire: Tokyo, it’s unlikely to have the same impact, unless the Thread Update is truly exceptional. However, if the game achieves unexpected success on Xbox Game Pass, Tango Gameworks may be encouraged to create a sequel that improves where the original game failed.
