The one who defined Test Cricket its best than anyone else in 2022 is deservingly the ICC Men’s Test Player of the Year to win the award. It’s none other than the England skipper Ben Stokes.
Ben Stokes wins ICC Men’s Test Player of the Year 2022
The English skipper smashed 870 runs with the bat, averaging 36.25, and picked up 26 wickets at an average of 31.19.
The stats above are a clear indication that Ben Stokes had a great year in Whites. But, sometimes, cricket is something bigger than numbers, and Stokes proved to be excellent as a captain too. With head coach Brendon McCullum, he actually transformed the fortunes of his team in Tests.
Players and the team have been aggressive before, but Stokes has taken it to a significant, consistent level after being handed the leadership baton. He has given the aggressive attitude a separate dimension, both with the bat and ball on the field.
Great run as a captain so far
Ever since being the captain, Ben Stokes helped his team land nine wins out of 10 games they have played in Test Cricket. It includes series victories against South Africa and New Zealand at home, leveling the one-off postponed test series with India for 2-2, and snatching a 3-0 win against Pakistan in an away series. The latter happens to be their best victory margin in the country.
Before Stokes was appointed the captain, England lost all four of their recently wrapped-up series and only had one victory among their previous 17 tests.
Needless to say, how impressive Stokes has been as a captain, setting great ideas and using his bowlers cleverly. His sensational all-around performance with the bat and ball, including his intelligent captaincy deservingly earned him the best ICC Men’s Test Player Trophy for 2022.
