According to a recent source, Ubisoft has given the go-ahead for a remake of Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag, but it is still in the early stages of development. As a result, the title is still years away from an official announcement and release, and a lot may happen between now and then.
Ubisoft is currently working on a variety of new Assassins Creed titles, including AC Mirage, AC Hexe, AC Red, and AC Nexus—a VR title starring Ezio, Connor, and Kassandra.
Interestingly, while a few titles, such as AC3, have received remasters and many others have received ports, the Assassins Creed franchise has received few full remakes. Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag is a welcome departure from that style, but it also comes after Ubisoft squashed rumors of an AC1 remake a few months ago.
If done well, it would make more sense for AC1 to be rebuilt first, especially if it could compete with Capcom’s Resident Evil remakes. In any case, it remains to be seen if Ubisoft has a detailed plan for Assassin’s Creed remakes, and what results from it.
Kotaku was the first to reveal the news of an Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag remake, citing unnamed sources. According to Kotaku’s sources, the project is still in its early phases, with a release date of a couple of years away, and Ubisoft Singapore is participating to some extent.
It is unclear whether Ubisoft Singapore is leading the project, given it is the lead studio on Skull and Bones. It should also be mentioned that Ubisoft Singapore has collaborated on every major Assassin’s Creed title since AC2. This is frequently the outcome of important gameplay elements, such as the naval battle in Assassin’s Creed 3.
Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag is available on PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Switch, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Wii U.
