Xavi Hernandez has spoken out on a potential return to Barcelona for Lionel Messi. And as expected, the manager has gone for a diplomatic stance over the Argentine’s future. Especially given that he has one year remaining on his contract with PSG.
The forward left Barcelona last summer after it was impossible for the club to register him. But recently, Joan Laporta said that he wanted the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner to rejoin them at some point in the future.
Xavi comments on Lionel Messi returning to Barcelona
Makes no sense to speak about Leo Messi’s comeback at Barcelona right now, he’s under contract with PSG so it’s impossible. We’ll see in the future,” he said.
“Laporta had already said he hoped it was not yet the end for Messi at Barca.”
But while Laporta remains optimistic about a return for La Pulga, his longevity could also be a factor. The player has said that he will take a decision about his future after the 2022 World Cup. And regardless of the outcome, it could be a vital point in Lionel Messi’s career which will dictate his future.
The club already has a very bloated squad and have several forwards that they need to get rid of. So, any move for Messi would require the squad to be trimmed to some capacity without Barcelona having to sell off more of their assets to register the player.
