Endnight Games’ Sons of the Forest will still be released on February 23rd, but its release plans have changed. Instead of marking the game’s full release, that date will be the day it goes into early access. The developer announced the decision this week, stating that it is taking this route to get the game into the hands of players when they were expecting it and to avoid having to delay the game again.
The game’s revised launch plans were announced on the Sons of the Forest Steam page, as well as on the developer’s social media channels.
Endnight Games reflected on the development of Sons of the Forest – the studio’s first game since the surprise hit The Forest released in 2018 – and stated that there is still work to be done, but the creators wanted to keep the February 23rd release date.
“It’s been a long journey since we first started ‘Sons of The Forest’ development and it’s grown into the biggest most complex game we have ever made,” Endnight said. “There is still so much more we want to add; items, new mechanics, gameplay balance and more. We didn’t want to delay again so have instead decided to involve the community in the continued development of this project and keep our February 23rd release date but instead release in Early Access.”
Endnight has only provided players with the occasional update on the game’s development, with gameplay clips and less impactful news posts like this one shared on a regular basis. The game was supposed to be released on May 20, 2022, but it was later pushed back to October 2022. It also missed that deadline, and was pushed back to February 23rd last August.
