Resident Evil PC Upgrades are now Reversible on PC

After Capcom’s Showcase this week, upgrades for some Resident Evil games went live, and users quickly discovered that they no longer have the option of choosing lesser quality settings. That was short-lived, as the corporation announced in a tweet that it had gotten an “overwhelming response” to the situation and is now changing its mind.

“Due to overwhelming response from the Steam community, we’ve reactivated the previous version that does not include ray-tracing and enhanced 3D audio,” Capcom said. Resident Evil 2, 3, and 7 will be available in both enhanced and previous versions in the future. Capcom also provided instructions on how to revert to a previous version of each game.

On consoles and PC, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 7 all received significant visual improvements this week, with Resident Evil Village getting its own later this year. On consoles, this means that native Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 versions of each game are now available to download, with older versions remaining on previous consoles.

Normally, this improvement on PC would not be a concern, but there are a few reasons why it has produced issues. To begin with, the minimal requirements for each game have been raised, which means that if you were previously only squeaking by, you may not be able to play them at all. The games now use DirectX 12, which is essential for features like ray tracing but also means that earlier Windows support and compatibility with many mods (including popular VR mods) is gone.

In October, Resident Evil Village will receive a similar update, which will include the game’s first story expansion as well as new Mercenaries mode elements, including the chance to play as Lady Dumitrescu.
