Barcelona FC signed Memphis Depay in their club. This was a free transfer from the Catalan club Lyon, which is now fully affirmed. Depay will join the club after this contract with Lyon ends at the end of June. The Catalans stated that he would sign the contract with Barcelona, which will be at least a 2 years deal, to 2022 to 23 campaign.
Barcelona tried to sign in Depay during the EURO 2020 season, as the manager of the club, Ronald Koeman, requested for it. It was when the Dutch defeated Ukraine by a 3-2 score on Sunday. Everything was okay, and the deal was about to get finalized as personal terms were agreed with him. The fee was around 25 million pounds, but eventually, the club could not accommodate Depay within their La Liga imposed wage cap.
Koeman was in touch with him earlier, when he played his role as the coach of the Dutch National team. He wanted to execute the deal again in January, but Barca lacked any president in place; hence couldn’t initiate a transfer.
The arrival of Memphis Depay
After all these, Depay arrived at the Barcelona camp a year later, and also became Barca’s fourth signing in this summer, following Eric Garcia, Sergio Aguero, and Emerson Royal. The Catalans also thought of signing another member of their club, Georginio Winjnaldum with Liverpool, but the player himself chose to go for Paris Saint-German.
Performance of Depay
Memphis Depay was there in PSV Eindhoven earlier, where he scored 50 goals in his 124 appearances. He earned 20 million pounds to move to the Premier League side, Man United in the year, 2015. However, he was unable to keep up that form at Old Trafford and consequently sold to Lyon two years later for an amount of 16 million pounds. There he scored 78 goals in his 178 appearances, where 24 of them came in the past season where Lyon finished in the fourth position of Ligue 1.
Barcelona’s Policy
With the signing of the contract with Memphis Depay, there might be an additional strength added to Barcelona. With great names besides including Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Antoine Griezman, it is expected that Barcelona will be back with extra power.
Also, he will compete with Martin Braithwaite, Ousmane Dembele, Philippe Coutinho, Ansu Fati, and Francisco Trincao for a starting position. Barcelona is looking forward to going with a good team, and it is expected that the days of glory will be back at Camp Nou.
