Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is set to reimagine the brutal franchise into a role-playing game. The planned “new collection” RPG is being created and co-published by NetherRealm Studios, the studio behind the most of the series’ mainline titles, according to a Warner Bros. Games announcement. Players will have the ability to assemble their own fighting team and send them into “huge” real-time fights against armies of foes in what is being referred to as “the first mobile-exclusive cinematic story experience for the franchise.” The publisher has made a suggestion that players would be battling against “a dark and terrifying enemy” that wants to wipe out all of the worlds, however specifics on the plot are still unknown.

One of the most recognisable video game franchises ever, Mortal Kombat debuted in 1992 amid much controversy because of its extraordinarily violent gameplay at the time. Despite the negative press, the brand has rapidly expanded, giving rise to numerous sequels, spinoffs, animated films and series, and even a number of live-action features.

A number of iconic characters, including Scorpion and Sub-Zero, returned in Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019, along with some newcomers.

“We are pushing the boundaries of Mortal Kombat to allow players to experience the franchise in new ways, while still staying true to its core visceral nature,” said Ed Boon, Chief Creative Officer, NetherRealm Studios. “With Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, we reimagined Mortal Kombat into a strategic team-based collection RPG with fast-paced, group melee combat that both new and existing fans can enjoy.”

Mortal Kombat is a legendary franchise and pop culture phenomenon, and it continues to engage players and advance the fighting genre across multiple platforms,” said David Haddad, President, Warner Bros. Games. “Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is a testament to why Mortal Kombat has been a top gaming franchise for over 30 years, as the NetherRealm team continues to innovate and bring new gameplay to fans.”

Onslaught is something that fans may anticipate, however it is presently unknown when the next core instalment in the franchise will be released. There have been rumours that NetherRealm Studios is now developing Injustice 3, the third game in the successful DC Comics fighting game series. Many insiders have now refuted these claims, claiming that Mortal Kombat 12 has already started early production, however this has not yet been confirmed.

Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is slated for a 2023 release and will be available on mobile devices.
