Hugh Edmeades to be back as an IPL 2023 auctioneer

The players have already registered their names for IPL mini-auction 2023, in Kochi. It will be taking place on December 23. Hugh Edmeades will be returning as the auctioneer. It has been hosted by Edmeades since 2018, after he succeeded Richard Madley. In 2022, he had a collapse due to postural Hypotension on the first day of IPl 2022.

The auction stopped after that incident and office bearers asked Charu Sharma to replace him while the medical team went for his check-up. However, he returned back for the final phase and got a lot of applause from everyone.

There were doubts Board will appoint him again for the auction. On the last Tuesday, Edmeades said that he will be leading the auction for the next season of the Indian Premier League in Kochi.

“I am thrilled to have been asked by the BCCI to conduct the 2023 IPL auction and am excited about visiting Kochi for the first time,” Edmeades said

In 2016, Edmeades went independent as an auctioneer prior to which he was an independent fine art, classic car, and charity auctioneer. He spent 38 years of his life working with Chritie’s. Previously, he had conducted more than 2500 auctions globally and in 2018’s IPL auction held in Jaipur, it was something completely new.

Post-IPL 2022 auction, he said it was “stupid” to miss his meals which might have caused his low blood pressure. He wanted to put everything behind him and hop onto this exciting auction in Kochi with the other 10 franchises.

Another monetary infusion is expected from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Each team’s basic price has been established by the Indian board at Rs 400 crore. However, it demands a minimum of Rs 1000 Cr per team. That would increase BCCI’s bank account to at least Rs 5000 Cr. Earlier this year, BCCI made Rs 48,390 from the sale of just the IPL Media Rights.
