Electronic Arts have announced huge ambitions to create additional Star Wars games, with three new titles being developed by its studios and partners. There will be a Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order sequel, as well as a new Respawn first-person shooter and a strategy game from former XCOM devs.

Following the success of Jedi Fallen Order, Respawn game director Stig Asmussen is working on the next installment in the Star Wars Jedi series. Another game featuring Peter Hirschmann as the game director is a first-person shooter. The third game is a strategy title from Bit Reactor, a freshly formed studio. Respawn is in charge of production, while Bit Reactor is in charge of development.

The next Jedi game might be launched as soon as later this year, according to reporter Jason Schreier, but the other two games are said to be “several years away.” Indeed, EA’s press release encouraged developers to apply for open positions working on the upcoming Star Wars games.

“We are excited to continue working with the superbly talented developers at Respawn,” Lucasfilm Games boss Douglas Reilly said. “They have demonstrated excellence in telling epic Star Wars stories along with best-in-class gameplay across different genres and we are looking forward to bringing more amazing experiences to the galaxy far, far away.”

Hirschmann was previously a vice president of development at LucasArts, where he oversaw the creation of the original Battlefront games. Respawn has just “just began” work on the forthcoming Star Wars FPS.

Respawn’s next Star Wars FPS is being developed by the same team that created the VR game Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, according to reporter Jeff Grubb. The new game, however, is not a virtual reality title and appears to be a “conventional” first-person shooter.

Almost nothing is known about Bit Reactor’s forthcoming Star Wars strategy game, but it is being developed by former XCOM and Civilization devs, including Greg Foertsch.

No additional Star Wars Battlefront games have been announced by EA. Battlefield company DICE was in charge of the franchise, and it reportedly pitched Battlefront 3 but the licensing costs were too high. Battlefront and Battlefront 2 from Electronic Arts sold a total of 33 million copies.

Over the years, EA has sold more than 52 million Star Wars games, producing $3 billion in revenue, with the mobile game Galaxy of Heroes alone generating $1 billion in revenue from microtransactions.

All of these games will be released while Respawn works on Apex Legends and another project. Mohammad Alavi, the creative director for that new project, just quit the business.

“Building on the previous successes of our EA relationship, this new collaboration highlights the trust and mutual respect shared between the world-class teams at EA, Respawn, and Lucasfilm Games,” Walt Disney Games VP Sean Shoptaw said. “Fostered by the expertise and passion within each team, we will create thrilling original games for diverse audiences across the Star Wars galaxy.”

The exclusive license for Star Wars games on consoles and computers is no longer held by EA. Ubisoft is working on its own open-world Star Wars game, while Zynga is working on Star Wars: Hunters, a free-to-play shooter. Aspyr Media is also working on a remake of Knights of the Old Republic for the PS5 and PC.
