According to a club release, Philippe Coutinho has signed Aston Villa on loan from Barcelona until the end of the season. The deal is conditional on him acquiring a work visa and passing a medical exam; he’ll fly to Birmingham in the coming hours.

    Joining Aston Villa

According to Phil McNulty, Coutinho will join Villa until the end of the season, with a £33 million buyout clause. It is an option to purchase, not a must. It’s believed that Villa will cover 65 percent of his salary and that the presence of his former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard in the Villa dugout influenced his decision.

Coutinho, on the other hand, is focused on the Brazilian national team. If the 28-year-old is to make Tite’s squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he needs to play considerably more often than he does now. Brazil is a good team.

Barcelona will be overjoyed that the trade has finally been completed. Coutinho was purchased from Liverpool for a club-record price in January 2018, but the playmaker has yet to make an appearance at Camp Nou. The powers-that-be at Barcelona have freed up the financial space they needed to sign Ferran Torres from Manchester City by taking his salary off the books.

    About Coutinho

Coutinho grew up in Rio de Janeiro, where he thrived as a member of Vasco da Gama’s youth system. Coutinho made his senior debut for Brazil in 2010. He scored two goals and was named to the FIFA World Cup Dream Team after appearing in the 2015 Copa América, the Copa América Centenario in 2016, and the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Coutinho signed Barcelona for a club-record €160 million in January 2018, making him the world’s second most expensive player (and the most expensive midfielder in 2018), and has since won two La Liga titles. He also played for the Brazilian national team, which won the Copa América 2019 in their home country.
