During the PlayStation Showcase event, Alan Wake 2 received a new gameplay clip that reveals a new playable character for the game who isn’t the protagonist Alan Wake. Alan Wake 2 by Remedy Entertainment has been widely awaited for years, but the PlayStation Showcase was the first time fans got a real look at gameplay.

The first Alan Wake 2 announcement trailer, released in 2021, didn’t reveal anything about the game. It confirmed that Alan Wake will return, that PC and next-generation consoles were the intended platforms, and that 2023 was the projected release date, but not much else. Alan Wake 2’s new teaser confirms many more details about the next survival-horror game, including a specific release date.

Alan Wake 2 will be released on October 17 for PC via the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X, with pre-orders available now.

The trailer introduces Melanie Liburd’s new playable character Saga Anderson, who will serve as a new playable character in Alan Wake 2. Anderson is an FBI agent investigating unexplained murders in Bright Falls, and her inquiry intersects with Alan Wakes. Anderson is joined by someone who appears to be Alan Wake 2 Lead Writer and Creative Director Sam Lake.

The clip depicts Anderson investigating an abandoned general shop with an over-the-shoulder angle reminiscent of the Resident Evil 2 remake and other recent RE games. Someone or something then smashes through the wall in a great jump-fright moment, reinforcing Remedy’s premise that Alan Wake 2 would be more of a horror experience.

While Anderson was the main focus of this new Alan Wake 2 trailer, she will not be the only playable character in the game. There will be two playable protagonists in Alan Wake 2. Players will alternate between playing as Anderson while she explores Bright Falls and Alan Wake, who is locked in the Dark Place, “a nightmare version of New York City.” This should bring a lot of variation, and it’ll be interesting to see if Remedy can pull it off.

Alan Wake 2 launches on October 17 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
