The 2023 ID.4 electric crossover SUV, which Volkswagen just begun building at its facility in Chattanooga, Tennessee, will start at the suggested price of $37,495; this makes it one of the most reasonably priced plug-in crossovers available right now.
The ID.4’s price could decrease even more when combined with the $7,500 federal EV tax credit, which might be renewed in light of the Senate Democrats’ latest reconciliation proposal, which is now being discussed. (VW claims it will charge $1,295 for each unit’s delivery.)
Since its introduction in 2021, 190,000 ID.4s have been delivered to customers worldwide, making it the most well-liked EV produced by VW. Herbert Diess, the departing CEO of Volkswagen, stated in May 2022 that the business has “essentially sold out on electric vehicles in Europe and the United States” for the year. Diess will leave his position in September.
A lower pricing for the EV was anticipated if the ID.4’s production was localised in the US. (The base model ID.4’s suggested retail price at the time it initially entered production in Germany in 2021 was $41,230.) The company initially stated that it wanted the starting price of its US-built ID.4s to be $35,000, or $27,500 with the federal tax credit.
The higher price that was just disclosed reflects how much more expensive EV manufacture, including the sourcing of battery materials, is today than it was four years ago. According to studies, the average cost of raw materials, such as the cobalt, nickel, and lithium required to create EV batteries, is currently $8,255 per vehicle.
Customers should begin receiving the 2023 ID.4 in October 2022. It will receive some minor updates. The EV is available from VW in three trim levels: Standard/Pro, S, and S Plus, with 62kWh and 82kWh battery options and rear-wheel or all-wheel drive as an option.
According to a simulated EPA test cycle, the entry ID.4, now known as the ID.4 Standard, has a new 62kWh battery that will give it an estimated 208 miles of range. In comparison to other comparable electric crossovers, such as the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Chevy Bolt EUV, and Nissan Ariya, all of which have an average range of between 250 and 300 miles, the ID.4 would fall on the lower end of the range scale. But given that the ID.4 will likely be in direct rivalry with the Chevy Bolt and the Nissan Leaf, which both retail for well over $40,000.
