Virat Kohli, the former Indian skipper and one of the best batters in the world, added another feather to his cap by becoming the first batter in the history of the T20 World Cup to score 1000 runs in T20 World Cup altogether. He is the only Indian and the second player after Sri Lankan cricketer Mahela Jayawardene to achieve this feat.
He started this edition by winning the player of the match award because of his contribution against Pakistan in the first game. He scored 82 runs in the first one and smashed a half-century in the second one against the Netherlands. However, in the third game against South Africa, he managed to score only 12 runs. This helped him cross the 1000-run mark. Lungi Ngidi scalped his wicket.
Virat Kohli has played 24 T20 World Cup matches in total and mustered 101 runs in 22 innings. He hasn’t yet smashed a T20 World cup century but has bagged 12 fifties. Mahela Jayawardane is the highest run scorer of the World Cup with 1016 runs in 31 matches.
Kohli is 15 runs away from leaving the Sri Lankan player behind and becoming the next leading run-scorer in this tournament. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is the third leading run scorer with 919 runs and can become the second Indian to score 1000 runs in this tournament.
Virat Kohli was out of his form for quite some time, being unable to score cross 1000 runs in 2021 and 2022 altogether. In IPL 2022, he didn’t have any such impact as well. Critics at one time even wanted the selectors to drop him and give chances to the newcomers. In Asia Cup 2022, in India’s last match against Afghanistan, he scored his maiden T20I and 71st ton.
Against Pakistan in T20 World Cup 2022, he smashed 82 off 53 balls that made India win. It is now considered to be one of his greatest innings. In India’s game against the dutch, Kohli again mustered 62 runs off 44 deliveries.
