Google Meet is introducing a “live sharing” feature that enables interaction with shared content, such as YouTube, Spotify, and a few games, by all meeting attendees. This will make it simpler for call participants to interact with content together in real-time.

Google Meet: YouTube and Spotify Together

It’s important to note that Google already added several live-sharing features to Duo back in February and is now bringing them to Meet as part of the merger. These features include, for example, watching YouTube films together. Users will be able to view YouTube videos together, listen to music on Spotify, and play games like Heads Up!, UNO Mobile, or Kahoot! using the live-sharing feature.

These new capabilities will be accessible through the three-dot menu under a new Activities page that also includes Q&A and polling options. Users can then start a shared activity from that point on; for example, if they wish to listen to a Spotify track together, they would tap on the Spotify symbol, and Meet would take them to the Spotify app so they can join a group session. Notably, the two to five-participant group session option is only accessible to Spotify Premium subscribers.

    Google Merging Duo and Meet

Last week, Google updated Duo’s symbol and changed its name to Google Meet in order to complete the process of combining the two video calling programs. It’s all very confusing, but Google Meet will now be known as “Google Meet (original),” and it will have a green symbol. In-meeting chat, virtual backdrops, instant and scheduled meeting options, and other new features have also been added to Meet by the IT giant.

While these most recent updates support Meet calls on various platforms, users who are already part of the Apple ecosystem will be more accustomed to this style of social content consumption thanks to SharePlay, which is compatible with a wider range of apps like Apple TV+, TikTok, Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, NBA, Twitch, TikTok, MasterClass, ESPN+, Paramount+, Pluto TV, Apple Fitness+, and Apple Music.
