Amid further fan protests against the Glazer family, Michael Knighton claimed he was planning a “hostile takeover” of Manchester United. Famous for showing off his football skills before signing ca ontract with Stretford End.
That acquisition ultimately fell through, but he held a seat on Old Trafford’s board of directors for some time. More than 30 years later, the businessman claims he is ready to make a new offer for the Manchester United.
The pressure from fans to sell the Glazers continues unabated. The latest demonstrations have forced the club’s megastore to close ahead of his 2-1 loss to Brighton in the 2022-23 Premier League opener.
Knighton About His Takeover Bid
“We are a club in crisis and we all know the reason why,” stated Knighton to Manchester United The Religion.
“We have an inept and frankly useless ownership who know little about this game of football. Everyone knows that we need new ownership of this football club and that is my aim and those are my objectives.”
“I am making good progress, continuing to talk to the people, I have got some good pledges and good finance. We are now working on the offer document. Remember, it is a hostile bid – that simply means that the club isn’t officially for sale.”
“But my intention is to present these owners with a legitimate, potent and commercial offer to say: ‘You have run out of road it’s time go because your time is up.”
“And frankly, the fans worldwide have had enough of this regime. The exciting feeling of a new season, which we all have, and that balloon of excitement that is there, it was all burst when we quickly saw the performance against Brighton. The club is in crisis and it will remain in crisis while we have this current ownership.”
Will the Glazers be Selling Manchester United?
The Glazer family is rarely given interviews, which irritates United loyalists. But earlier in the summer, CEO Richard Arnold stressed the owners’ willingness to invest in the team in recent seasons during a debate with disgruntled fans in a pub. Fans were able to catch a glimpse of the club’s atmosphere.
Despite mounting pressure to end their relationship with the club, there are few signs the Glazers are looking to sell.
Following Manchester United’s opening day defeat at Brighton, Sky Sports pundit and club legend Gary Neville has urged the current owners to place a takeover bid.
“The time has come for the Glazer family to sell the football club. It’s now,” he mentioned.
