Three Bayern Munich players were named in a death threat letter calling for the ‘filthy Bavarian pigs’ to be executed. The anonymous letter, which was given to the officers of second division team St Pauli, mentioned Robert Lewandowski, Manuel Neuer, and Serge Gnabry.
About the Letter
Police in Hamburg are looking for fingerprints and DNA evidence on the note, and Bayern and the German football authorities have been put on high alert. According to the German daily Bild, the letter arrived at Hamburg’s St Pauli on January 12 and was addressed to: ‘Save the league, save football. Fire and death to the dirty Bavarian pigs.’
It directly named the three players, with the author threatening Bundesliga referees and demanding their deaths. St Pauli forwarded the letter to police officers at the iconic Davidwache station near the Reeperbahn.
The German State Criminal Police Office (LKA) has contacted colleagues throughout the country to see if any other letters have been sent, and has also notified the Football Association.
Investigating the Situation
A police spokesman told Bild: “We are investigating on suspicion of threatening and disturbing the public peace by threatening to commit crimes. We will check the backgrounds.”
Although a surprising setback at Bochum last weekend, Bayern Munich is on course to win their tenth consecutive Bundesliga title, sitting six points clear of Borussia Dortmund.
It would be the Bavarian club’s 32nd Bundesliga title and the 17th this century. Bayern Munich will face Austrians Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League last-16 on Wednesday night.
