Skull & Bones received an “M for Mature” classification from the ESRB earlier this week as a result of its use of blood, narcotics, violence, and suggestive themes. That comes after similar ratings for the game from both Australia and Brazil. Youngsters shouldn’t live the life of a pirate.
Then there came the rumor from expert whistleblower Tom Henderson that Ubisoft would re-unveil Skull & Bones in the first few days of July. Given that the game has been in development for eight years—first as a spinoff for Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag and subsequently as a standalone title—that seems like a smart idea.
The release of Skull & Bones won’t be delayed for too long, according to a recent leak. The game’s release date on Microsoft’s internal database was first tweeted by Xbox store observer Aggiornamenti Lumia on November 8. Henderson then awarded the game the coveted green checkmark.
Really though an eight-year development cycle isn’t the longest we’ve ever heard of, it was certainly long enough for us to wonder whether the game even existed. After allegations that Skull & Bones was being restarted in 2020 and that a contract with the Singaporean government was the only reason it was still being developed at all, the situation for the game seemed especially dire.
Skull&Bones was proved to be real and nearly complete based on alpha footage made public in April. The video showed off Skull & Bones’ early stages and included a tutorial that described the game’s rules. Since Assassin’s Creed 4 came out so long ago, fans will probably need a refresher course on ship-to-ship combat. To take on riskier tasks for bigger and better ships, there is also a crafting system, crew morale, and reputation system.
