Failing to live up to the expectations after his appearance in La Masia, Riqui Puig parted ways with Barcelona and joined MLS side LA Galaxy.

The 22-year-old midfielder joined Barcelona’s youth academy in 2013. After rising from his youth, he made his first-team debut in 2018 with his 4–1 win over Cultural his Leonesa at Camp Nou and Copa del his Rey.

Considered one of the most talented players in the Barcelona academy in recent years, he has trained with the first team and has had several opportunities with various coaches such as Ronald Koeman and Xavi Hernández.

However, he was unable to establish himself in the team, playing only a few minutes, even though the club was struggling to sign due to financial problems.

Despite lacking playing time, Puig unsuccessfully tried to convince his former coach that he was eligible for the team. With LA Galaxy knocking out this summer, the two sides have reached an agreement for Puig to sign a three-and-a-half-year contract.

Barcelona has confirmed that the club reserves the right to buy back Puig and is also negotiating a 50% sales commission. It is likely that Barca would recoup half of the final transfer fee should the Galaxy sell Puig. That said, for a player once considered a key part of Barcelona’s rising core, it’s a surprising turn of events.

“We are delighted to welcome Riqui to the LA Galaxy,” mentioned coach Greg Vanney.

“Riqui Puig is a very technical and well-educated player with incredible experiences for his age. He will fit perfectly into our group and our style of play.”
