Rockstar Games and Double Eleven Studios are bringing Red Dead Redemption and its Undead Nightmare addition to the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 on August 17. Rumors have circulated for quite some time that Rockstar was planning a Red Dead Redemption remaster or perhaps a full-fledged remake of the 2010 masterpiece, however, it appears that those rumors were only partially true.
Based on what has been shown thus far, this new version of Red Dead Redemption is not a remaster. It’s sort of like a somewhat improved port that delivers the Western open world to certain modern platforms. But what may perplex some fans is how this new version of Red Dead Redemption bypasses major platforms and will retail for a whopping $49.99 despite the game being over a decade old and bringing no noticeable new content to the table.

Red Dead Redemption will be available digitally on August 17 for PS4 and Switch, with a physical release scheduled for October 13. The game will not be released on the PS5, but it will be playable on Sony’s latest console thanks to backward compatibility with the PS4’s library. There will also be no Xbox version, however, the original Xbox 360 version is playable on contemporary Xbox platforms. Most disappointingly, this rerelease does not include a PC version of Red Dead Redemption.
This re-release of Red Dead Redemption appears to be missing one of the original game’s primary features: online multiplayer. Although this has yet to be confirmed, the statement makes no mention of multiplayer, instead emphasizing that the bundle includes “both classic, single-player experiences.” Red Dead Redemption online multiplayer was well-received when it was released, and some fans may be sad that it appears to have been dropped with this port.
Red Dead Redemption is available now for PS3 and Xbox 360 with PS4 and Switch versions coming August 17.
