PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has suggested the Champions League initiate a Super Bowl-esque opening ceremony to make sure every match converts to ‘an event and entertainment in exactly the same fashion as the US showpiece. The Super Bowl has just risen to fame for its pregame and halftime arrangements at present as it has for the NFL Championship match playing out at night, with this year’s ceremony containing performances from Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mickey Guyton, Eminem, and others.
PSG President Suggests to Introduce Super Bowl-esque Opening Ceremony
Champions League matches are a lot less shiny and extravagant spectacles if compared, regardless of being a brief opening ceremony conducted before every final. In a recent interview, PSG chief Al-Khelaifi showed his frustration stating that the Super Bowl feels bigger as compared to the Champions League final, requesting UEFA officials to emulate their American counterparts by introducing an opening ceremony and modifying their Super Cup format.
He feels that the final should be bigger and that he cannot understand how the Super Bowl feels bigger than the Champions League final. He further said,
The Super Bowl, and the US generally, have this mindset, creativity, and entertainment. That’s what I have suggested, to have an opening ceremony to the Champions League, to have one match on the opening night where the winners take on a big team- maybe it is not a good idea, but at least let’s challenge the status quo. Each match needs to be an event and entertainment.
Al-Khelaifi, the chair of the European Clubs’ Association, has become one of the strongest executives in the continent over the last twelve months after taking a sharp stance against controversial plans for a European Super League.
