Warner Bros. Games and NetherRealm Studios have officially announced the arrival of a rebooted Mortal Kombat 1, set to release on September 19 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC. After a teaser during an earnings call earlier this year, Warner Bros. Discovery and NetherRealm revealed Mortal Kombat 1 on their website and released a reveal trailer on YouTube.
“Mortal Kombat 1 is the latest title in the acclaimed Mortal Kombat videogame franchise developed by award-winning NetherRealm Studios,” reads a post on the website.
“The game will introduce a reborn Mortal Kombat Universe that has been created by the Fire God Liu Kang, featuring reimagined versions of iconic characters as they’ve never been seen before, along with a new fighting system, game modes, bone-crushing finishing moves, and more.”
The confirmed character roster includes popular fighters like Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Shang Tsung, Johnny Cage, and more. NetherRealm has confirmed that these characters will be part of a new Story Mode, but they have yet to disclose the other game modes featured in Mortal Kombat 1.
Players who preorder the $109.99 Premium Edition will gain early access starting on September 14, along with 1,250 Dragon Krystals (in-game currency), the Kombat Pack (which includes a Johnny Cage skin based on Jean-Claude Van Damme), early access to six new playable characters, and five new Kameo Fighters.
Kameo Fighters are a unique roster of characters that assist players during matches and are separate from the main Mortal Kombat 1 character.
Additionally, a $249.99 Collector’s Edition will be available exclusively for PS5 and Xbox Series, featuring all the content from the Premium Edition along with a 16.5-inch Liu Kang sculpture, three exclusive art prints, a steel case, and an additional 1,450 Dragon Krystals.
For those who preorder any version of the game, a beta will be available on PS5 and Xbox Series, and post-launch, NetherRealm plans to add cross-play and cross-progression. Fans have eagerly awaited this game since NetherRealm announced their new project in July 2021, following the end of support for Mortal Kombat 11. Actor Andrew Bowen, who voices Johnny Cage, also hinted at the development of the 12th entry in a now-deleted tweet.
Mortal Kombat 11 was released back in 2019, making this a solid four-year wait for fans of the gory and violent fighting game series.
