Delhi Capitals defeated Mumbai Indians to score another 2 points in the points table. It was again a low-scoring match at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, where DC won with 4 wickets in hand and with 5 balls left. DC qualified for the playoffs yesterday when KKR lost to PBKS. Despite that, they were not at all reluctant and had a good win against the 5-time IPL champion, MI.
The Match
Delhi Capitals batted first, and as usual, Sharjah showed the colour of its slow pitch. Eventually, the run rate was slow and none of the batters could stand for long. Only Suryakumar Yadav from MI made an average score of 33 of 26 balls. Also, it was good for the upcoming T20 World Cup that Surya got back his form. Both Avesh Khan and Axar Patel from DC picked up 3 wickets each.
In reply, the DC batting lineup was collapsing at first, when Shikhar Dhawan got run out by Kieron Pollard along with Prithvi Shaw, and Steve Smith got dismissed by Krunal Pandya and Nathan Coulter Nile respectively. From then, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer handled the business with the former scoring 26 of 22 and the latter scoring 33 of 33. Though Pant got out, Shreyas Iyer was not out and took the match to the last over.
Hetmyer also played a good cameo inning of 15 of 8 balls which helped to remove the pressure from the DC batters. DC’s victory came with a six from Ashwin’s bat and they registered their 9th win of the season. It became a bit tough for MI to qualify for the playoffs now, but still, they have a chance if they win both their remaining matches with a good run rate.
