Intel’s Chief Executive Pat Gelsinger is planning to attend a virtual White House meeting on the global chip shortage. This meeting will include representatives from companies including Apple, Microsoft, Samsung Electronics, GM, Ford, and Stellaris.

The meeting will be headed by the Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo and National Economic Council Director Brian Deese, the Commerce Department. This meet’s significant topics of discussion will be the impact of the coronavirus Delta variant on-chip supplies and how to better coordinate between chip producers and consumers.

There will be some more attendees apart from the group mentioned above. They will include TSMC, BMW, and Micron Technology Inc.; however, the sources from the White House only reported that the attendees of the meeting would include producers, consumers, and industry groups. The Commerce Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Due to the impact of the pandemic, the world experienced a shortage of semiconductor chips which forced top automakers to cut down their production worldwide after a decrease in demand for cars.

The White House meeting is the latest in a string of summits on the topic, allowing the Biden administration to show it is taking the chip crunch seriously.

In April, Biden met with executives from major companies; in the meet, Biden had bipartisan support for legislation to fund the semiconductor industry. Chip manufacturers across the world are increasing their production of chips to meet the global demand.

Silicon giants like Intel and TSMC have already announced their plans to ramp up chip production with new U.S.-based plants; however, it will take several years to make the new semiconductor plants ramp-up to full production.
