Rumors have circulated that a Half-Life series announcement could take place at Gamescom, but fans should not hold their breath. For those unfamiliar with the event, Gamescom is essentially Europe’s version of E3, albeit while E3 hasn’t covered much since the COVID-19 outbreak, Gamescom has been going strong since the first event in 2009.
Gamescom 2023 will be held from August 23 to August 27, with the Gamescom Opening Night Live presentation on August 22. The Game Awards Geoff Keighley will present Gamescom Opening Night Live 2023, which will include a range of important game reveals and announcements.
Fans will have to wait and see which titles are showcased at Gamescom this year, but they shouldn’t expect to see Half-Life.
A Reddit post citing an obsolete Gamescom companion app that listed Valve and Half-Life for the show sparked the rumor that Half-Life will be at Gamescom. While Valve has not stated if it would be present at Gamescom, the outdated companion app isn’t a good indicator either way. Half-Life enthusiasts can still tune in to Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 22 on the off-chance that Valve has anything planned for the big event but don’t walk in with any expectations.
If Half-Life has a presence at Gamescom, one of the more likely scenarios is that it will be for a PlayStation VR2 port of Half-Life: Alyx. A PlayStation VR2 port of Half-Life: Alyx has long been rumored, although no such project has been confirmed as of this writing. With Half-Life: Alyx being the highest-rated virtual reality game to date, it would make sense for it to make its way to Sony’s new VR gear, though only time will tell if that happens.
