In a press release, 505 Games stated that “The original version of Hideo Kojima’s critically acclaimed and genre-defying epic lands on the Microsoft ecosystem for the first time, available to audiences who are subscribed to the PC version of Xbox Game Pass”.
“The original version,” which implies that the Game Pass edition does not contain the enhancements and changes made by Kojima Productions in Death Stranding Director’s Cut, is a critical statement in the preceding line. New plot tasks, weapons, delivery tools, and combat techniques are all part of this.
This might be because Kojima Productions and Sony have already signed licensing deals. Director’s Cut launched on PS4 and PS5 in September 2021, and while the upgrade became available on Steam in March of this year, it’s possible that an existing console exclusivity deal – the kind that Microsoft rather provocatively referred to as blocking fees – prevents the upgrade from being released on Microsoft’s platform. Another possibility is that Kojima Productions simply does not want to make every aspect of Death Stranding accessible to Game Pass subscribers.
In any case, there are plenty of activities in the base version of Death Stranding. The epic video game from Kojima Productions, in which you take on the role of post-apocalyptic deliveryman Sam Porter Bridges, is both massive in scope and mechanically extremely sophisticated, with a variety of systems and gadgets that allow you to create delivery routes across its gorgeous recreation of Icelandic landscapes (which is supposed to represent a shattered United States).
Death Stranding will be made available on Game Pass on Tuesday, specifically at 5 p.m. Pacific. For us Brits, that is 1 am. Even though I enjoy Death Stranding, I would hold off until a more reasonable time to begin playing because you probably won’t even get through the introduction before sunrise.
