In the Commonwealth Games 2022, India have already put a strong foot forward. With numerous medals so far, there are also some athletes who managed to win gold in their respective events.
Achinta Sheuli (73 kg), a weightlifter, lived up to his high billing on Sunday by winning India’s third gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Sheuli, the event favorite, lifted 313 kg (143 kg + 170 kg) to win the gold at the NEC Hall in this city on Sunday. Erry Hidayat Muhammad of Malaysia, who gave Sheuli a stiff challenge, came in second place overall.
Earlier on Sunday, 19-year-old Jeremy Lalrinnunga won the men’s 67kg division after snatching and clean-jerking 300 kg. With a 140kg lift in Snatch, Lalrinnunga also shattered the Games record for his division.
On day three of the Commonwealth Games, on July 31, Jeremy Lalrinnunga continued his nation’s domination in the weightlifting competition by winning the second gold medal, moving India up to the top six on the medal standings.
Mirabai Chanu won the first gold for India at the Commonwealth Games 2022
With her victory in the women’s 49kg competition on Saturday, Mirabai Chanu went on a record-smashing spree and led a four-medal count. This was India’s first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
In the men’s and women’s 55kg competitions, Sanket Sargar and Bindyarani Devi both earned silver medals, while Gururaja Poojary took home bronze in the 61kg competition.
Due to their second gold, India passed Malaysia, who had seven medals, in the standings. The medal totals up until Achinta Sheuli’s weightlifting competition are also included in the table, which is arranged by the number of gold medals earned.
