Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s recently delayed second season now has a confirmed hardcore mode. The announcement of the highly anticipated addition is welcome news for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 fans looking for a more punishing and immersive experience.
With the recently announced two-week delay for Modern Warfare 2 season 2 now set to arrive on February 15, fans are buzzing about what the upcoming content patch may entail. According to Infinity Ward press releases and several leaks, the confirmed additions so far include new weapons, maps, operators, and an entirely new ranked mode.
The latter will follow the official CDL ruleset and include an ELO system for players to advance through the ranks. While Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 may still feel new to some, others believe the game has reached a plateau and are looking forward to Season 2 to breathe new life into it.
Hardcore mode will make its Modern Warfare 2 debut with the season 2 update, as announced on Twitter on January 22. Hardcore mode foregoes the more gamey elements of Modern Warfare 2 in favour of the most realistic experience possible, with a lower time-to-kill, friendly fire, and no HUD. Previously released mode tier 1 gave players a hardcore-style version of the multiplayer shooter, but most fans thought it was a half-measure.
With the release of Season 2, die-hard Call of Duty fans can finally go all-in on their favourite game.
It has not been announced which game modes will receive a hardcore variant, but it is safe to assume that it will cover the same ground that tier 1 did.
Hardcore mode in previous Call of Duty games is a visceral experience that rewards solid team communication and map awareness. Because of the removal of the mini-map and player tags for allies, as well as the addition of friendly fire, a reckless gamer can easily sabotage their team in hardcore. The less forgiving version of Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer may turn off more casual players, but for others, it is an immersive, rewarding, adrenaline-pumping experience unrivalled in the game’s other game modes.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
