The Premier League match between Burnley and Tottenham on Sunday was put on hold owing to unsuitable weather conditions. The decision came from the match referee, Peter Bankes just two hours before the 2 pm encounter.
The Spurs were yet to reach Turf Moor when the decision came. There had been extensive snowfall since 11 in the morning. Burnley’ press team and Matt Williams, the home team’s Chief Operating Officer, turned up by then. Besides, tremendous undersoil heating was tried too. However, all the efforts didn’t come fruit-full.
Bankes waited till Antonio Conte’s arrival before taking a final call. After consulting with both the managers, the decision of postponing the game was made. Bankes explained that their primary focus is safety and they even asked the club officials to clean up the snow, to do whatever they could to help conduct the game smoothly. Despite vigorous cleaning, within ten minutes the snow was back!
Critical Encounter for Burnley Put on Hold
The match was a critical one for both sides and the team announcement was done before the significant face-off. Burnley currently stands at the 18th position with three points far from safety. On the other hand, if Tottenham won the match, the Spurs could have ended the gap with West Ham who stands in fourth place, to a point.
Who Got into the Playing XI?
Davison Sanchez was included in the playing XI, despite a disappointing show in the European outing. Oliver Skipp, found his place too, after being on one-game suspension in the league. Chris Wood had been in consideration too, to mark his 150th league appearance for the Clarets.
The Hammers face a difficult trip away to Manchester City, who could conclude the weekend top of the Premier League table, if opponents Manchester United defeat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, in Sunday’s late faceoff.
