Test cricket has taken all the importance in terms of team selection in Indian cricket. The new office bearers realized that T20 needs to be given a special focus while selecting a player. When the Cricket Advisory Committee appoints a selection committee, one selector who has played T20 cricket or has been the coach in IPL will be given top preference.
From now onwards, players with Test caps won’t be the first choice anymore.
The CAC will be reviewing the existing eligibility to be a selector. The chief selector with the most Test caps will be continuing. A player who has previously played T20s or ODIs will be eligible for the role. An IPL coach is also eligible for this role. The selection committee has to speed up in order to appoint the 5th selector. Right now, the committee has only four members.
BCCI will restructure the selection committee, and a special sector to be appointed for T20
The Lodha Committee has earlier stated that former players with Test caps will be eligible for this. BCCI will follow the previous route. A player without any Test playing experience but having T20 experience will help too. The upcoming Cricket Advisory Committee is set to restructure the existing selection committee eligibility criteria.
“Time has changed and it is important to recognise that T20 will dominate world cricket. So, you cannot have a former player in the selection panel without any experience in T20s, playing or coaching. When the new CAC is appointed, at least one selector in the committee will focus on T20s as we have a T20 WC every two years,” a top BCCI official said
Indan head coach Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma are getting calls for the T29 team. Sunil Joshi is the only selector present there with T20 experience.
The current Selection Committee looks like this:
- Chetan Sharma- Test: 23, ODI: 65, FC: 121
- Sunil Joshi- Test: 15, ODI: 69, FC: 160
- Debasish Mohanty- Test: 2, ODI: 45, FC: 117
- Harvinder Singh- Test: 3, ODI: 16, FC: 109
The new Cricket Advisory Cricket Committee will be taking charge after T20 World Cup. Their first task will be to select the selection committee. Chetan Sharma is going to be the chief selector but it depends on India’s performance at the T20 World Cup.
If India fails to perform at the World Cup, Chetan Sharma is likely to be dismissed.
Debasish Mohanty will compete for four years of combined junior and senior selection committee service.
“The rule that was applicable with Abbey Kuruvilla will also apply to Debu Mohanty. Debu was inducted by the COA in junior panel in early 2019 and he had served two years till 2021 before being upgraded to senior panel after Devang Gandhi completed his tenure,” a senior BCCI official told
Ajit Agarkar, who previously applied for the position of chief selector, is once again a leading contender. The former Indian pacer participated in 110 First Class games, 191 ODIs, and 26 Tests. He will replace Chetan Sharma as the main selector if he reapplies and gets chosen
