The Assassin’s Creed series originally had players walking through history and the modern world (via the character Desmond Miles) throughout its early years. The modern-day goodies and baddies of the plot have taken a backseat position in the past several titles from the series, but Ubisoft plans to bring back that part of the story for future entries.
More About the Assassin Creed Shadows
In the latest interview with the head of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Marc-Alexis Coté, he dived into how the recent games haven’t been able to create a strong link between the present and the kingdom of back before. At the heart of that concept was the Animus, a virtual-reality device that allows the user to experience the memories of their ancestors, which are stored in their DNA. Desmond Miles served as the narrative anchor for the series, immersing players in the modern conflict surrounding the search for powerful Isu artifacts—known as Pieces of Eden—that could alter history.
“Desmond’s journey was central to the contemporary conflict and the pursuit of these artifacts,” Coté stated to Eurogamer. However, after Desmond’s demise at the conclusion of Assassin’s Creed III, the modern storyline found itself at a creative impasse. “Ending Desmond’s arc was a tough choice, and afterward, the modern narrative struggled to establish itself.”
That’s changing soon, though, as Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be leading us into the future of the franchise. It is being developed as an entry in Assassin’s Creed Infinity, a title not only set in the franchise’s universe but one inside a kind of Animus that will also house the continuing modern setting for the franchise. This would make the modern-day plot “complementary” to the historical arcs, “meaningful contrasting” them in a meaningful way that delves into how the past shapes the present and touches on ideas of autonomy versus coercion, Coté stressed.
“The foundation for this new direction will take shape with Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which will lay the groundwork for the narrative evolution to come,” Coté remarked. Assassin’s Creed Shadows was previously scheduled to launch in October, but it is now set for a new date of February 14, 2025. Separately announced by Ubisoft, this delay is meant to allow developers more time for the game and means the planned early access phase has been scrapped.
