According to new research, Apple dominated the top 10 best-selling smartphones in the world in 2021, with seven out of ten handsets on the list being iPhones.
According to market research firm Counterpoint, the top ten best-selling smartphone models accounted for 19% of total global smartphone unit sales in 2021, up from 16% in 2020. Apple topped the list with seven slots, its highest ever, followed by Xiaomi with two and Samsung with one. In 2021, there were over 4,200 active smartphone models on the global market.
“The share of the top 10 models is increasing YoY, indicating a trend of brands focusing on their leading models and making their portfolios leaner in some cases,” the research firm said in a statement.
“With entry-level models facing component shortages in 2021, we also saw faster diffusion of key features in the mid-tier segment,” it added.
Apple has five of the top five models in 2021. The iPhone 12 was the most popular model, with the iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 13, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 11 following closely behind. Apple’s top three models accounted for 41% of total sales.
In 2021, Samsung’s Galaxy A12, an entry-level smartphone, was ranked sixth. Throughout the year, A12 was in high demand in almost all areas and countries.
