Apple’s forthcoming iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max may finally include an always-on display. Apple could launch the feature in iOS 16, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, allowing the iPhone to display a limited amount of information even when it’s locked.
According to Gurman, the iPhone’s version of always-on mode could work similarly to how it works on the Apple Watch Series 5 and up — with always-on mode activated, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will lower the lock screen’s frame rate, allowing them to save energy while the display remains powered on. It’s unclear whether the upcoming iPhone will include the same low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) display found in Apple’s latest Watch models. Because they’re designed to keep gadgets from consuming too much power, these low-powered screens are crucial to getting always-on mode to work properly.
Analysts expected the iPhone 13 will have an LTPO display to enable an always-on display last year. Always-on mode is already supported by a lot of Android devices and has been for a long time. Always-on displays, for example, on select Samsung devices can show the clock, battery level, widgets, and more while the phone is locked.

The always-on display isn’t the only feature rumored to be limited to the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, as previous reports suggest Apple may only ship the two premium devices with its new A16 CPU.
On June 6th, Apple is expected to announce a slew of new updates at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Gurman predicts that Apple will improve the iPad’s windowing and multitasking capabilities, following past predictions. He cites developer Steve Troughton-results, Smith’s which suggests that Apple is working on functionality that would allow users to freely resize windows. In addition to introducing new audio features to Messages, Gurman expects that Apple will update its System Preferences menu to make it more like the iOS Settings app.
