Microsoft has released Age of Mythology: Retold, a complete remake of the well-liked spinoff game that first debuted in 2002, to commemorate the franchise’s 25th anniversary. The creators at Ensemble Studios debuted a more radical variation on the tried-and-true Age of Empires model to the gaming industry during the heyday of the real-time strategy subgenre.
Favor, deities, and hero units were all introduced in Age of Mythology, which neatly integrated legendary ideas with the core Age of Empires gameplay. The Greeks, Egyptians, and Norse were the three factions included in the game’s initial release. Through Age of Mythology’s expansion packs, other additions like the Atlanteans and the Chinese were made, to a generally mixed reaction.
The fact that the remaster was announced on Twitter by the game’s own account rather than the Age of Empires account suggests that Microsoft has more in store for the spinoff than one might have anticipated.
Age of Mythology: Extended Edition, which was released in 2014, was a previous attempt at remastering the game before its release in this Definitive Edition.
Skybox Labs’ attempt, though a faithful homage to a vintage strategy game, was unfortunately criticised upon release due to a number of flaws and glitches. Age of Mythology: Tale of the Dragon, an expansion pack that was published in 2016, included a new playable faction, a new fully voiced campaign, and new maps.
Given that the Age of Empires developer has previously hinted at an Age of Mythology remake, many were unsure whether Relic Entertainment would take on a genuine remaster anytime soon. The franchise’s latest comeback confirmed its status in video game history and gave a genre that sorely needed it fresh eyes. Given the way Age of Empires’ rebirth was handled and the fact that Microsoft now owns three of the most recognisable real-time strategy IPs, it is clear that the company is eager to invest in the genre. Microsoft acquired Blizzard Entertainment.
It’s crucial to notice that the Xbox logo appears in the trailer as well, indicating that the Age of Mythology reboot will also be available on consoles. This has been a consistent pattern for Microsoft’s remasters, the majority of which received console ports after being meticulously updated for the present. Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition and Age of Empires 4 will actually be released for the Xbox in 2023, according to Microsoft. Although it is unknown if Age of Mythology: Retold will pave the door for full-fledged sequels or expansion packs, one thing gives its fans peace of mind: the knowledge that this IP is in capable hands.
