Final Fantasy 16 (XVI) is in production and will be released on PlayStation 5. The RPG is the next mainline title in the long and renowned Final Fantasy series – with each entry, Square Enix radically transforms the environment, characters, and gameplay, and this is no exception. FF16 will, as far as we know, be a single-player adventure, although no release date has been announced.

Following the publication of the reveal video, Square Enix unveiled a new teaser website, confirming character identities, the story, and the setting of this installment. We meet three important characters in the trailer: Clive (the primary protagonist), Joshua (Clive’s younger brother), and Jill, a family acquaintance close to the two boys.

Square Enix has remained relatively silent since the game’s announcement, keeping its cards close to its chest. However, producer Naoki Yoshida said in May 2022 that Final Fantasy 16 is nearly finished. We finally got a clearer look at this forthcoming entry thanks to the State of Play conference in June 2022.

Everyone recalls the excruciatingly long wait for Final Fantasy 15, which was first shown in 2006 as an entirely different game before being reworked and released in 2016. This time, don’t hold your breath Because Yoshida is a master of organization. He’s the brains behind Final Fantasy 14’s A Realm Reborn reimagining – an incredible turnaround that shows FF16 is in good hands, at least in terms of story and timing.

A new trailer was finally unveiled during the State of Play conference in June 2022. Naoki Yoshida, who demonstrated gameplay, promises “high-octane battles” unique to the game’s Eikons.

Final Fantasy XVI is set in the Valisthea realm. Valisthea is home to other crystals, which are massive magical superstructures that offer people the ability to wield magic in their daily lives. All of Valisthea’s major geopolitical powers have built their governments and cultures around these crystals, which are a major source of power and strife.

The Dominants, who are humans born with the capacity to call and control Eikons – your usual Final Fantasy summons — are an integral part of these political institutions. There’s even catchy music at the end of the latest “Dominance” trailer to remind you of all the Eikons.

Dominance was our first major look at Final Fantasy 16 since its announcement. In addition to providing a new look at the impending plot, Square Enix demonstrated some key encounters, such as confrontations with mystical summons like Shiva and Ifrit.

Square Enix has stated that it will present at this year’s Tokyo Title Show with a 50-minute stream on October 1, but earlier comments from Final Fantasy 16’s development team give us the idea that it’s probably safest not to expect an appearance from that game.

FF 16 producer Naoki Yoshida stated during a Final Fantasy 14 stream in July (translated by Twitter user @aitaikimochi and Siliconera that the team would rather show off the game closer to its launch rather than drip-feeding information over a long period. The game’s official website still indicates that “the next big information reveal is scheduled for 2021,” but when it will happen in 2021 is unknown.
