Today, Microsoft is delivering Windows 11’s first major update, which contains a slew of new features. In the United States, a public preview of Android apps for Windows 11 is available today, along with revamped Notepad and Media Player programmes. The taskbar will receive several enhancements in the first major Windows 11 upgrade.
Users will be able to install apps from Amazon’s Appstore in the public preview of Android apps on Windows 11. There are ways to get the Google Play Store functioning on Windows 11 unofficially, but there are a limited amount of Android apps compared to the broader Google Play store.
The taskbar is where the most changes in this Windows 11 version can be seen. In Windows 11, the time and date will be available on multiple displays for the first time, something that was not available at launch. In this version, the weather widget returns to the taskbar, and Microsoft Teams calls will have a new mute/unmute capability in the taskbar. You’ll also be able to screen share a specific programme or window directly into a Microsoft Teams call from the taskbar.
The Media Player and Notepad programmes for Windows 11 have also been overhauled by Microsoft. Multi-step undo, a better search interface, and dark mode support have all been added to Notepad. The new Media Player programme is intended to replace Groove Music and Windows Media Player, and it has audio and video functionality as well as a design that better reflects the UI enhancements in Windows 11.
While Microsoft recently switched to a yearly feature release schedule for both Windows 10 and Windows 11, this isn’t the only important Windows 11 update this year. Instead, Microsoft will update Windows 11 more regularly with new features.
“Over time, you’ll see us release new features into Windows 11 for end-users more frequently in addition to our annual update,” says Windows and devices chief Panos Panay. “We will leverage the variety of update mechanisms we have in place, including servicing and Microsoft Store updates. Our goal is to deliver continuous innovation, providing you with the best experiences year-round.”
Microsoft intends to test new experimental Windows 11 features with customers until 2022, with secret features such as wallpaper stickers and tablet mode updates already in the works.
