It could be difficult for a football league to develop interest both at home and from foreign countries, but MLS has done a wonderful job for the last 15 years. One of the finest ways to see if there is actually any interest in the league and the players are the shirt sales. No one buying the T-shirts could be a serious problem.
As the MLS store website ranking reveals, LAFC’s Carlos Vela is the most popular player in the MLS when it comes to people selecting his name on the back of their shirts.
Incredible names in the MLS
Some top names prevail in the top ten, like former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker Javier Hernandez and former Barcelona midfielder Riqui Puig.
Vela was the second-highest seller of jerseys last year behind Welshman Gareth Bale. Following that, Vela reached the summit ahead of Germany’s Hany Mukhtar of Nashville and USMNT defender Walker Zimmerman, also of Nashville.
Besides Vela and Chicharito, Inter Miami’s Venezuelan Josef Martinez and Atlanta United’s Argentinian Thiago Almada come sixth and seventh, respectively.
Team with the most jerseys sold in top 25
The team with the highest number of jerseys sold in the top 25 is the Seattle Sounders. Others on the list are Jordan Morris (no 5), Salvadoran-born American Cristian Roldan (no 12), Uruguayan Nicolas Lodeiro (no 17), Peruvian Raul Ruidiaz (no 21), and Brazilian Joao Paulo (no 25).
What MLS has been doing for the last few years is simply incredible, and no doubt it has been successful in attracting loyal fans from all over the globe. May this popularity keeps on increasing with each passing day; that’s what we can hope for!
