Warner Bros. Discovery, the newly established business formed by the merger of Discovery and WarnerMedia, is looking into a major overhaul of DC Entertainment’s film, movie, and game production.
Variety is the source of the information. The idea, according to the publication’s sources, is to increase the value of DC Entertainment IPs by implementing a more coordinated strategy. While additional bets on characters like The Joker or Harley Quinn are on the table, Warner Bros. Discovery executives also want to see more of Superman, who hasn’t had a standalone film since 2013’s Man of Steel.
However, in addition to film and television, Warner Bros. Discovery is allegedly considering expanding the gaming production of DC Entertainment characters. Of course, Discovery owns Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, which is already working on three DC-themed games: Gotham Knights, which is being developed by WB Games Montréal (Batman: Arkham Origins) and is set to release on October 25th; Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which is being developed by Rocksteady (Batman: Arkham Origins, Batman: Arkham City, Batman: Arkham Knight) and is set to release in early 2023; and Wonder Woman, which is being developed by Monolith Productions.
Warner Bros. Discovery has a long way ahead of us
When it comes to WBIE’s remaining studios, the possibilities are fairly limited. For almost a decade, TT Games has focused solely on LEGO games; Avalanche Software is currently working on Hogwarts Legacy, which is set to release in Holiday 2022, and would likely expand on it if the game is a success.
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment WB Games New York looks to be a support studio for Boston, San Diego, and San Francisco, which are all focused on mobile game production. Of course, there’s NetherRealm Studios, which could be working on a new Injustice game, but it doesn’t seem like it would fit the description, given how niche the fighting game genre is.
