Throughout the marketing for Venom: The Last Dance, star Tom Hardy has been insinuating it would be his last time bringing Eddie Brock/Venom to life. In light of the film’s theatrical debut, writer and director Kelly Marcel discusses the ending and the path the franchise could take following it. This is likely true, as the film appears to conclude the current sequels of Venom. The Venom symbiote eventually rescues Eddie and humanity from Knull by assimilating with the alien xenophages and destroys itself in the process. Eddie survives, but he is no longer accompanied by the symbiote, and he is reduced to a normal life without Venom.
All About the Venom: The Last Dance Ending
Marcel told Entertainment Weekly that she and Hardy had always intended Venom to be a trilogy, a decision that was fully backed by Sony. “We always saw it as a three-story arc and knew where we wanted it to end. It was a vision we had from the very first Venom,” Marcel explained. “It’s something special, and we’ve been incredibly fortunate. Sony has been an amazing partner, and they’ve supported what I think is a bold choice.”
Eddie’s story may end here, but motion-captured Knull (Andy Serkis) stays imprisoned in his likely CG universe—for a bit longer. Despite his first escape plan getting thwarted, a mid-credits scene continues to hint he will not give up and when they return there will no longer be any Venom for him next time.
“Knull is an extraordinary, terrifying supervillain we were always eager to explore,” Marcel noted. “We wanted to bring the xenophages into this story, as they’re Knull’s progeny, just like the symbiotes. The xenophages had to be sent by someone, and Knull is enormous in scope, so this film is just an introduction. Knull’s story has many more chapters; he’s not just a one-movie villain.” In the comics, both Venom and Eddie have died before but it remains to be seen if they return in this canon or which next movie might pick up where The Last Dance left off with the arrival of Knull.
